Student Activities

STEP 1: Insect Literature

During reading class, all students will read and discuss the story"All Eyes on the Pond" by Michael Rosen in the 3-2 Harcourt Brace Signatures Reading Anthology. In groups, students will read and discuss other trade books listed under resources to develop a better understanding of insects.

STEP 2: Insect Research

Each student will print out an insect research worksheet. In pairs during computer lab, students will gather information about their chosen insects.

STEP 3: Compare/Contrast Two Insects

Using the information gathered with their partners, students will complete a Venn Diagram comparing the similarities and differences between the two insects. Each student will use the word processing computer program Writing Center to write a compare and contrast report on two insects.

STEP 4: Field Trips

Students will take Field Trip 1 and Field Trip 2 . Notice the parts of the insects. Find the head, thorax, and abdomen. Find the eyes, legs, and antennae. Look closely at the pictures.

STEP 5: Favorite Insect Graph

During math class, students will develop a list of insects they researched. Data will be collected to determine the favorite insect of the class. During computer lab, students will use this data to create a graph in Graph Club. Results will be shown in a picture, bar, and circle graphs. Each student will print out his/her graphs on one page.

STEP 6: Kid Pix Insect Slideshow

Students will take pictures with a digital camera or regular camera of insects around the home, the school, and the community. Pictures will be scanned and used in a class Kid Pix Slide Show. Students may draw their insect if they prefer. Each student will use the information gathered on the insect worksheet and will write three important facts or interesting thing about their insect. Be sure to save your work as your initials/insectslide/3AN.

Another slideshow students could create would be a timeline of the life cycle of an insect. This slideshow would have four slides. (egg, larva, pupa,adult) Students will write one or two sentences describing their illustration on each slide.

STEP 7: 3D Insect Model

Students will design their own insect in Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. They will take their design and will create a 3D model at home. Finished projects will be displayed in the classroom. Be sure to save your work as your initials/insect/3AN.

STEP 8: Insect Poems

After students have read and enjoyed insect poems in Louise Binder-Scott's The Animals' Garden of Poetry students will write insect poems in Writing Center. They will insert a graphic to go along with their poem. Poems will be posted on this link to share with other classrooms at Charlton Street School and their parents at home.

STEP 9: Quilt

Students will design an insect 5x5 insect square for a class quilt. Squares will be provided by the teacher who will assemble the finished squares into a quilt that will be displayed in the classroom.
