BICYCLE PATROL
The Southbridge Police Department bicycle
patrol unit was formed in 1994 to enhance high profile,
interpersonal patrol in various areas including downtown Southbridge.
The bike patrol was formed
to complement the already existing walking beats in town. While the
bicycle is based on the same
premise as the walking beat, it adds the mobility to respond to calls
in different areas of town.
There are currently 9 officers trained to be part of the bike unit,
including one sergeant. The unit
has 4 bikes, which are used by all the officers in the unit. All
officers are trained in bike safety,
bike patrol procedures, injury prevention as well as having to pass
specialized physical fitness exams.
Since 1994 the unit has posted statistics comparable to cruiser units,
and exceeding
statistics of foot beats in most categories. The bike unit has become a
valuable attribute of the
Southbridge Police Department.
